Please have no hesitation to contact the committee members with any issues or suggestions that you might have, and please also support them in their endeavours to help maintain the success of our club in 2009.

In particular please do what you can to support your club financially by endeavouring to pay your subs on time, attending the club's social events, eating meals from the club canteen and having a drink at the bar. We anticipate that it will be difficult to maintain our current levels of sponsorship that Steve has won for us in recent years due to the current economic climate – this year's sponsorship made the difference between the Club making a modest profit and a significant loss.

Former Woodville Player Ken Gramas

Ken "Woodie" Gramas played for Woodville Lacrosse Club as our US player after his graduation. He was hosted by the Potter and Steer families. We were all shocked by his tragic death in 1992. Read the following press release about his college honouring him.

Men's Lacrosse: Ken Gramas '88 Pavilion to be dedicated at Franklin & Marshall Homecoming

The Ken Gramas '88 Pavilion story is not about brick and mortar. It's about classmates linking in – with each other and with their memory – to create something bigger than any edifice.

Twenty years ago, a young man from Westchester, New York, galvanised a college team in a way his classmates remember to this day. 16 years ago, a tragic avalanche took his life. Next weekend, during homecoming, hundreds of people will return to Franklin & Marshall College (F&M) in Lancaster, PA to remember "Kenny Kidd" as the Ken Gramas '88 Pavilion is unveiled to the public – a tribute to a man whose legacy is still very much alive. And a great triumph for the small group of F&M alums who turned their love and respect for a great athlete and friend into a groundswell of interest – and ultimately into a landmark building that fitting memorialises him.

"The Ken Gramas '88 Pavilion project took off at a dinner with eight of Kenny's Chi Phi brothers," said Tony Demarco, Development Director at F&M. "I explained the project and said it would cost about $700,000," he recalls. "I told them I had already met with one of their teammates, who had pledged $20,000. I then went around the table and by the end had $85,000 committed."

As people learned of the campaign, the donations poured in from fraternity brothers, family, teammates, the women's lacrosse team, high school friends, F&M players he never met, and admirers from around the country. As the donations came in, so did the stories. Whether an account of playing on the F&M lacrosse team he captained, or a tale of "going hell-bent-for-election on a bump field in Wyoming" with him, they all end with the same refrain: "Kenny Kidd was the man."

And that man was the inspiration behind the building being dedicated on Saturday, October 11, at 6:00 pm at the very place his memory is most vibrant – most alive – the F&M lacrosse field. Like all projects of this scale, many people's tireless efforts have made it possible. But there's a palpable sensation that runs through it all that somehow elevates it. As Demarco states in one of his pledge letters:

"I envision a day where Ken's family, his teammates, his fraternity brothers, and his classmates stand in unison as this structure is unveiled to the public. Many of you will speak to a man you remember, a friend that you miss. Ken will finally have his day. AND you will know that you were the foundation of something very special, a memorial that is worthy of Ken Gramas. You will be able to come back over and over throughout the years and marvel at what YOU were able to build for your friend. You will have a place to stop and remember. Ken will have a place that he rightfully deserves."

The Ken Gramas '88 Pavilion will be ready for F&M's homecoming. And its unveiling will bring together the many friends and family who want to ensure that future generations know the story of "Kenny Kidd". This is the kind of powerful remembrance everyone all can rally around.

Warriors Triumphant!!

The Woodville Lacrosse Club have capped of a successful Season 2008 with premierships in four grades this year. Our Under 11 Girls, Under 13 Girls, B Grade Men and League Men all claimed the flag for their divisions.

Saturday was a big day for the Woodville Lacrosse Club, culminating in the men’s league team winning its 8th premiership in 11 years.

With the Under 11 girls having already stitched up the premiership for their grade, the Warriors had a chance to secure up to four more flags on grand final day.

The Under 13 girls started off the day's proceedings, winning the grand final 15-10 over a Burnside team who beat them two weeks ago in the semi finals. Ruby Brock-Maddiford was best player while Emily Johns chimed in with a lazy seven goals. Well done girls!

Unfortunately for our U18 girls, Brighton was too strong for them on Saturday, but they should be congratulated for a strong season and finishing runner up to a very good team. We hope that you all continue to play into the senior grades because you are the future of the Club and our great chance of becoming a force in the women's league competition in the years to come. Congratulations also to Lauren Guerin who came third in the u18 competition’s best and fairest award.

Tom Philp was then shocked to find out that he had been awarded the Bruce Rosewarne medal for best and fairest player in the Under 18 boys' competition. Congratulations Philpy!!!

Next on the Warriors' menu was Glenelg's B Grade team. After conceding four early goals without response, Woodville rallied and chipped away at the Seahawks' lead, allowing them only one more goal and running away with a fantastic 7-5 victory. Congratulations to Toby Caldow for winning the best on ground medal for his dominating performance at the face-off.

Finally, the big one was the men's league grand final against Brighton. Woodville broke out from the first whistle, with Peter Inge winning the first face-off, driving straight to goal and putting one past Brighton's young goalie in the first few seconds and setting the tone for the match. The Warriors led 4-2 at quarter time. Best-on-ground James Inge scored four goals in a big second quarter for Woodville, who extended the lead to 11-6 at half time.

The final two quarters were close, with Brighton making a late charge in the final quarter, scoring six to take the margin to within two goals. However Woodville's rock solid defence of Craig Schicker, Adam Caldwell and Peter Witcomb, with Charles Manning again superb in the net on the big occasion, were never going to let the Bombers pull off a famous win. It was sweet victory for coach Peter Mathwin, unwanted by Brighton after last season, returning fire with a 3-0 sweep in 2008 over the Bombers plus an Australian Club Championship to boot.

Brighton were somewhat previous in printing up their 2008 premiership t-shirts before the match, having not learnt from Glenelg's futile optimism last year. No one should ever underestimate the Woodville Lacrosse Club's commitment to hard work and their ability to play their best when it matters most.

Thanks to all the Warriors' supporters for braving the at-times wintry conditions (thanks also to Neil Parker and Pete Mathwin for bringing their canopies!!) with your vocal support in helping your club deliver another yet another premiership. Let us never get tired of this success!!

If anyone has any photos from Grand Final day for all grades, please send them to me at luke@warriorslax.com. I will also happily take any photos from past games (or past seasons) so that I can add them to the website's photo gallery at www.warriorslax.com/gallery

More news and photos to be added to warriorslax.com shortly!!

Go WARRIORS!!!

Warrior Coaches complete session three of Coach Education Program

In an endeavour to offer quality coaching and grow our future players we have had a number of our coaches participating in a Coach Education Program. This program has been funded by Janice Manning of Face the World and facilitated by Charles Manning.

The coaches will complete four workshops in total, the first two explored the responsibilities, accountabilities and basics of coaching juniors. The participants have felt that they are building a great network or collegiate approach to growing our juniors. They also feel a greater deal of confidence in their roles.

The third workshop explored leadership, teaching new skills and team work with the group completing a new "High Ropes Course" at the Novotel in the Barossa Valley. As well as having some great fun on the 500m long flying fox over the Jacobs Creek, they also completed a number of elements 8m off the ground in the pine trees above the resort. Teams were trained to operate the equipment to 'belay' each other whilst off the ground. This was followed by a debrief and discussion workshop in Lyndoch with catering from the local bakery.

Workshop four will offer some specifics on individual skills training and wrap the whole training programs learnings together.

Please thank these coaches if you get a chance, they have had to give up their own time to benefit both the club, its juniors and ultimately their own development. Thanks again to Janice for her drive in putting this programme together.

CHAMPIONS OF AUSTRALIA!

In what could be the finest moment in the Woodville Lacrosse Club's 109-year history, the Warriors' Men's League team were crowned as the inaugural Australian Club Champions after defeating Eltham in a tough, physical encounter at Finsbury Lacrosse Field on Saturday, 7 June.

The Warriors came out of the blocks quickly, scoring the first two goals in the first five minutes of the game. However, the Panthers came back with a vengeance, with six of the next seven goals to lead the Warriors 6-3 at quarter time.

After the quarter time break, Woodville regrouped and set itself on a mission to overpower the winners of the past four Victorian State League premierships. With a solid game plan for defence and attack, the Warriors slowly chipped away at Eltham's lead, entering the main break down 8 goals to 7, before tying the game at 10 at three quarter time, setting up an enthralling final quarter.

The Panthers scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter, and fancied their chances to run away with the game. However, they underestimated the steeled determination of the Warriors. Woodville scored the next goal to again tie the game at 11, then with a couple of minutes remaining in the game finally took the lead for the first time since the first quarter.

Coach Peter Mathwin called a time-out, with instructions to hold onto the ball for the final seconds of the game. This call was unheeded by Michael "Raging Bull" Santi, who subsequently drove to the cage and slotted another goal for the Warriors to take the game out of Eltham's reach.

Winning the first ever Australian Club Championship has capped off the tremendous achievements attained by the Woodville Lacrosse Club's golden generation of lacrosse players, who have dominated South Australian lacrosse for the past ten years. We hope the success of this inaugural national club championship event will lead to it becoming a permanent and regular fixture on the Australian Lacrosse calendar, and that we will continue to compete for this new pinnacle of lacrosse for years to come.

A big thankyou must go out to all the Club's supporters who were vociferous in their chanting throughout the game. Your unwavering support no doubt pushed us to perform at our best when we needed it most; this victory is as much yours as for anybody on the team. It is one for the whole Club and one to savour for the rest of our lives. GO WARRIORS!

Congratulations to Peter Inge with another extraordinary effort to be awarded the MVP of this game, with special mention to our American import Greg Lazarus with six outstanding goals.

Goal scorers: Greg Lazarus 6, Michael Santi 4, Mike Boerma 1, James Inge 1, Peter Inge 1.

Best players: Peter Inge, Greg Lazarus, Charles Manning, Luke Oswald, Michael Santi, Craig Schicker.

Warriors to Challenge for Title of Australian Champions

The Woodville Lacrosse Club men's league team will next month match up against the Eltham Lacrosse Club of Victoria to vie for the title of Australian Lacrosse Club Champions.

Both Woodville and Eltham are reigning premiers in their respective state leagues, but are no stranger to each other, having in the past visited each other's back yards for pre-season matches. Both teams will be matched up in terms of age and experience, in what should be a cracker of a game to determine Australia's premier lacrosse team.

The Australian Club Championship will be held on the astroturf at Finsbury Reserve, Woodville North on Saturday, 7 June. The evening kicks off at 6pm with the women's championship game between local state league premiers Glenelg taking on Victorian premiers Newport, with the men's game to follow.

The winning teams will be awarded prizemoney of $2500, plus there will be MVP prizes and door prizes on the night.

Following the games the After Party will be held at the Eurobar, Tattersalls Hotel, 17 Hindley Street in the City.

We are very excited to have secured Peter's services with his strong focus on developing future talent and a big desire to secure this year's premiership. Peter has a calm and organised style that will suit our current squad perfectly. He plans to introduce a stronger focus on physical well-being, ensuring we have a trainer on the side on game days and available to support us with both prevention and treatment of injury during the week.

I am sure most of you will not know too much about Peter's background given he disappeared from SA Lacrosse at his playing prime of 22 to pursue career aspirations. He has coached league in Melbourne and obviously here, but I am sure you want to know a a little bit more about him:

  • Age 46 - married to Traci with children; Hannah and Hamish.
  • Lacrosse history:
    • State Under 16s twice, Under 19s and Senior State three times. SA Box Lacrosse from '78 to '82. Australian Box Lacrosse World Championships 1980. I come from a lacrosse family with both brothers (Steve and John) having played, both sisters, a number of nieces and nephews and now my own children.
    • Premierships: Numerous Junior and Senior and Box Lacrosse over the years... but not League... until 2008!!!
    • Other: Represented Northern Territory in Indoor Cricket at Australian Championships. Played a lot of cricket, volleyball and golf. Keen motorsport participant in Classic Adelaide tarmac rally, hillclimbs and sprints.
    • League Coach: Chadstone '91 and '92 (I think !!).
    • League Coach: Brighton '06 and '07.
  • For the past 25 years Peter has held senior positions within a number of renowned financial organisations. Peter grew up in Adelaide and after working in the Northern Territory and Melbourne for several years with ANZ/Esanda moved to Queensland as Esanda Regional Manager Dealer Finance. He later joined Centrepoint Finance as the Queensland State Manager and then National Manager of Operations. He returned home after nine years in Brisbane to set up in South Australia for family reasons. Peter now leads his own business and is committed to the Adelaide market and is determined to make a difference.
  • Hobbies - Family, renovating a '50s "classic" home (a never ending job!!), watching my children playing sport, classic motor cars, car racing in general.

Please make Peter feel welcome and go ahead and introduce yourself.

League training commences Monday night, same lax place, same lax channel!!

Chairman's Message

Welcome to season 2008!

Get ready for an exciting and rewarding season of lacrosse. We are looking to build the club's position with the addition of women's reserves, men's B's, U/15 boys, additional U/11 teams and more players in existing grades, all part of our target to double our 2007 membership numbers by 2009. We are also looking at a possible women's B team too.

I am pleased to announce that the women's and men's-on-field committee positions have been filled. Giulia Marion has taken the women's spot and Michael Elliss the men's, thanks and welcome to you both, we are so pleased that both these key roles are in good hands. Full details of this years committee, including the inclusion of Luke Oswald as Secretary, can be seen on the club website. You can also see our strategic plan, this year we intend to provide club financial details and minutes of meetings on the web site to improve visibility of the management of the club.

Sadly we have already had two resignations of key positions. The first was Peter Burdett, men's league coach. Peter sadly had to step down due to personal reasons, we wish Pete all the best and again thank him for his wonderful work in season 2007. A sub-committee led by new mens-on-field rep, Mike Elliss with James Inge, Craig Schicker and Pete Witcomb are seeking a new coach. They will communicate with players to get pre-season training under way very soon.

The second resignation was Karen Markham, Social Convener. Karen's changed working arrangements have restricted her ability to lead in this role, she is keen to still be involved and support who ever picks up this role. Anyone interested in supporting us by picking up this important role should contact myself or Luke Oswald.

As you may well know, Craig Schicker has joined Cathy Conaghty as co-coach of our league women. They are working with Giulia to get the women under way.

Andrew (Barney) Dinnison has taken on the Junior Convener role and has begun working to organise coaches and managers for all junior teams in season 2008. If you can help out in any way with juniors please yell out. As a key priority the committee is clear it must have a boys U/15 this season, this is in addition to strengthening all other grades. If you know any boys under 15 years of age as at 1 January who we should talk with please let Barney know.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Yours in lacrosse

Notice of Annual General Meeting

7.00pm, Monday 19 November 2007
At Grange Surf Life Saving Club

We have a vision to grow and improve our club; we want to look at improving our facilities or find a better home. We want to double our club's numbers within two years and fill teams in every grade whilst continuing to get on-field success. To do all this we need help and we need to make money.

The current committee has put a lot of good foundations in place to further these ambitions. We have incumbents for the majority of committee positions, leaving only the two "on-field" positions without nomination. We will be pleased to make some exciting announcements about next season and about coming years too.

It is crucial that we get support. Do this by attending this year's Annual General Meeting in a special place - The Grange Surf Life Saving Club.

2007 is the year of the Life Saver and we want to grow ties with this successful club. Enjoy a fantastic sunset drink at the beach whilst hearing about our future plans and considering how you would like to support and be part of our objectives.

We want to have an AGM with force; please bring all the crowd and do not stay away from this one. It is not just a place for those who are on the committee or intend to be, it is the one time of the year when we should all gather to consider our future. Please ring your club mates and arrange to come to this one.

The Grange Surf Life Saving Club - 497 Esplanade, Grange - We will do the normal mail out but this email was to give everyone the chance to get an early heads up and get this in the diary.

Warm regards

Warriors sweep awards

At the Lacrosse SA night of Champions Woodville brought home a bag of awards. Leading the charge was James Inge, with the MVP, joint Best & Fairest and Leading Goal Scorer, this multi time recipient is arguably the greatest player this club has seen. Great work James, you are a champion and leader in our sport. James was also selected along with club captain and legend Craig Schicker in the all-stars. Peter Burdett, rookie coach, was names Lacrosse SA Men's Coach of the Year - well done Pete.

Mark "Nugget" Noble may have to play another season, after bringing home the association's Best & Fairest Reserves player. A runaway winner in the votes, he led the team from the middle all year. Congratulations to a deserving recipient. Michael Elliss won the Leading Goal Scorer for Reserves, we were so pleased to have him back at his home club this year and look forward to seeing him lead the young players next year.

Dalton Osborne has stood out in the umpiring ranks this year as a fresh and objective official; this was rewarded with a Rookie of the Year for Dalton. Great work, we cannot have enough quality officials and Dalton has certainly raised the bar for his peers, congratulations!

Warriors U15 and U17 Girls' Teams both defeated in the Grand Final

Our Under 15 girls' team came heartbreakingly close to winning this year's premiership, but ended up losing by two goals to Brighton in overtime. Our Under 17 girls' team were convincingly beaten by Brighton in their final, however despite the mismatch they gave their all for the whole game. Commiserations to both teams, but you have done us proud and if you all stick around we could have an exciting future for women's lacrosse at the Woodville Lacrosse Club!

3 September 2007

Warriors U15 and U17 Girls' Teams in the Grand Final

For the first time in a long time, the Woodville Lacrosse Club have two junior girls' teams participating in grand finals this weekend at the North Adelaide Lacrosse Club grounds. The Under 15 girls booked their berth a week ago by defeating Burnside in the second semi final but face Brighton at 10am on Saturday after they also defeated Burnside on the weekend. The Under 17 girls will also face Brighton, at 11.30am on Saturday after defeating Burnside in the preliminary final. Best of luck girls!!!

Unstoppable Warriors win Men's State League Grand Final

The Woodville Lacrosse Club are celebrating a remarkable undefeated season after a 14-8 victory over arch nemesis Glenelg under lights at the Port Adelaide Hockey Club grounds on Saturday 25 August.

After a tight tussle in the first half, with scores locked at 4 apiece, the Warriors broke the Seahawks' shackles in the premiership quarter to take a commanding 9-5 lead. Woodville continued their dominance in the final quarter to take a deserved victory in what no one would have predicted at the beginning of the year to become an undefeated season, emulating the feat of 1999.

Club Chairman, elder statesman, and long overdue first time league premiership winner Charles Manning fulfilled a lifelong ambition, playing a superb match in the cage and was deservedly awarded the President's Medal for the Best and Fairest player on the ground.

Warriors Junior teams in the finals

As well as having a successful season in the men's league, the Warriors have four junior teams competing in the finals this season. Unfortunately for the Under 13 boys and girls, both teams were knocked out by North Adelaide in their respective semi finals. The Under 17 girls were defeated by Brighton but after finishing second in the minor round are still in contention and play in the preliminary final this coming weekend. The Under 15 girls team won their major semi final with a one-goal nailbiter over Burnside and go straight through to the Grand Final at the North Adelaide Lacrosse Club grounds on 8 September.

Farewell Brian Calabrese

Brian Calabrese, Warriors premiership player and Tom Hanks lookalike, leaves Adelaide on Wednesday to return to the USA. Have a safe journey home Brian!

Warriors advance to Men's State League Grand Final

The Woodville Lacrosse Club defeated arch-rivals Glenelg 12-11 in overtime in a thrilling second semi final match at St Marys on Saturday. Down 5-8 at three quarter time, the Warriors pegged back the deficit to take the game into overtime. The Seahawks never gave up but the Warriors withstood the pressure to take the game by the narrowest of margins. Woodville now face the winner of this weekend's preliminary final match between Glenelg and Brighton. The Grand Final will be held at the Port Adelaide Hockey Club grounds, at the corner of Hart Street and Swan Terrace, Ethelton on Saturday 25 August, starting at 6pm.

Woodville says goodbye to three more Americans

Last week saw the finals matches played for the Warriors by Erin O'Boyle, Katie Mazer and Kyle Rotelli. We thank Erin, Katie and Kyle for your time and efforts at the club - as players, as coaches and as clubmates. We hope that you enjoyed your stay with us and hope that you never forget your time here. Many thanks also to the Dinnison and Matheson families and to Peter and Courtney for hosting our Americans.

Shawn Darrell's Farewell

The Quiz Night on Saturday 28 July also served as the Club's farewell to American recruit Shawn Darrell, who flew back home on Sunday morning. As well as being a great asset to the team and socially around the club she did great work with coaching the Under 11 girls, assisting with the Under 13s and running clinics at Seaton Park Primary. Will be missed by host families the Mannings, and Cathy Brooks & her daughters the Parker girls. Thank you Shawn!

Luke Oswald's 100th League Game

Luke "Ozzy" Oswald played his 100th State League game in Saturday's hard-fought win against Burnside. Incidentally the website editor, the Oz lit up the game with a string of improbable intercepts that helped the Warriors break Burnside's shackles and score the last seven goals of the game for a 12-7 victory. Well done Oz, you legend.

10 July 2007

Past Players Function on 7 July a Huge Success!

Approximately 70 past players along with our sponsors and life members braved the weather to see our League men's team down Burnside 12-7, giving their expert opinions along the way whilst enjoying some nibbles and drinks. Those who could stay and others who came for the evening enjoyed a Gourmet BBQ dinner in the clubrooms (to everyone's relief that it was indoors) chatting over old times, photos, and downing a few more ales.

One of the memorable moments of the evening was a past player from the Port Adelaide days Lyne Skinner (aged approx 87) gave a speech and offered some words of wisdom.

Comment from past player:
"Congratulations and thanks by the way for Saturday night - it was great to see all the oldies, most of whom don't seem to look any different to how I remember them!"

Thanks must go to the organising committee in Sue Hogan, Jo Dinnison, Ignazio Marchesan, Cliff Savage, Kelvin Gaskin and Geoff Forrest in what was seen as a fantastic event that should be held every year.

Under 13 boys summit Mount Lofty - Sunday 24 June

The boys, some parents and some under 11s took the hike from Waterfall Gully to the summit and back. Picnic lunches and water in the backpacks and the boys headed off, just under a 3 hour turn around after lunch at the summit. A great team building and exercise session - thanks to all involved!!

USA Players update - 4th of July Freeze

Last week the girls played in a gale force storm, winter at its fullest in Adelaide. 90 km/h winds! But now head into the mid season break and have a chance to travel and have some well earned adventures. The guys won their game Saturday in a tough encounter with Burnside and then have their break too, Kyle and Brian have some plans for trips too, so all should have some fun.
Sadly for Kyle he flies home two days before our big championship game in August. He will miss out on the chance to play for a championship medal. He might have to do some negotiating with his Delaware coaches???
All the players are involved with coaching juniors and are making a great contribution to our future. Shawn organised a lacrosse clinic at a local primary school "Seaton Park" that all the US players helped in at different times too. The crew have been a big hit at the club this year and have fitted in nicely.
Hope they all had a great 4th of July and that it starts to get a bit warmer than in Adelaide soon.

The rest of our recruits arrive this week

The two other US girls, Katie Mazer and Erin O'Boyle, arrived last Sunday and made a big impact in their first game on Wednesday. They helped the girls jump Glenelg and be leading at the first and second break, being up by 5 goals at one point before being over-run in the second half. The game was marred by a shocking injury to one of our best young talents, Danni Hunter. She was hit in the face by a Glenelg shot and was taken to hospital. All our thoughts are with Danni and we ask people to support her right now. Danni we are thinking about you, please make a speedy recovery. The club will be writing to the association about the need for considering making face protection compulsory for the League teams and to make our feelings known about the aggressive nature of the incident. This sort of play cannot be condoned.
Brian Calabrese and Kyle Rotelli arrive this morning, Friday 8 June. They will both debut for the league in tomorrow's match against Sturt up at St Mary's and continue Woodville's strong tradition of fielding players with Italian surnames.

End of a Dream Run for our Recruits

The University of Delaware's dream run into the NCAA Final Four ended with an 8-3 defeat to Johns Hopkins University on Saturday. Bad luck Brian and Kyle, but congratulations for being part of the most successful team in your school's history. We can't wait to meet you both on your arrival!
The University of Pennsylvania were also knocked out in the semi finals by Northwestern University, 2-12 on Saturday. We look forward to welcoming Penn's Katie Mazer as well as Erin O'Boyle from Hopkins to join our other US recruit Shawn Darrell to the Warriors' women's league team.

21 May 2007

Anthony Feleppa at World Indoor Championships

Australia have finished 6th at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Anthony contributed an assist in the 11-15 loss to England for a spot in the semi finals, followed by a goal and an assist in the 8-14 loss to Scotland for the 5th place final. We hope you had an amazing time in Canada and wish you a safe journey on your holidays and look forward to seeing you and Tracey on your return!

Three of Woodville's US Recruits make the NCAA Final Four

Brian Calabrese and Kyle Rotelli's University of Delaware team continue their remarkable run in the NCAA Division I Lacrosse season with a 10-6 victory over UMBC yesterday. Delaware will participate in their first ever Final Four weekend, and face perennial powerhouse Johns Hopkins University in the semi final. Best of luck boys!!
Meanwhile, Katie Mazer of the University of Pennsylvania will also be heading to the Final Four after they defeated Maryland 9-7 on the weekend. Penn now take on top-ranked Northwestern University, for whom Brighton Lacrosse Club's Hannah Nielsen plays, in the semi final. Unfortunately Erin O'Boyle's Johns Hopkins lost to Duke University 7-12, which has ended their season.

17 May 2007

Anthony Feleppa at World Indoor Championships

Anthony Feleppa is representing Australia who are currently participating in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Australia went down in the first two games 9-19 to the USA and 4-24 to Canada, but bounced back yesterday to defeat Ireland 14-8, with Anthony contributing four valuable assists.

Jarrad Pangrazio's 100th Game

Jarrad "Iron Rod" Pangrazio will celebrate his 100th State League appearance in this weekend's game at Burnside. Well done Jarrad!

14 May 2007

Woodville's US Recruits

Woodville's recruits from the USA are having successful postseasons with their college teams. The two men's recruits, Brian Calabrese and Kyle Rotelli, were in the University of Delaware team who scored a major upset over the defending champions the University of Virginia 14-8 over the weekend, with Brian contributing a goal (and he's a defenceman!). They face UMBC in next weekend's quarter-final.
Woodville women's recruit's, Erin O'Boyle and Katie Mazer are also heading to the NCAA quarter-finals. Erin will be playing with Johns Hopkins University matching up against Duke and Katie Mazer will be with the University of Pennsylvania against Maryland. We wish them all luck.
This is all exciting news to go with the arrival of our first US player, Shawn Darrell. Shawn landed in Adelaide on Saturday morning, 12 May. Welcome Shawn!!

11 May 2007

Charles Manning's 200th Game

Charles Manning, veteran league player and Club Chairman, will tomorrow celebrate his 200th State League game for Woodville. A great milestone to reach after initially retiring from league almost 10 years ago. Congratulations Charles and we hope to celebrate the achievement with a big win!

2 May 2007

Kate Threadgold

I am pleased to announce that after finalising Kate's release to Wilderness for 1-2 seasons that Kate has agreed to take on a new role with our junior girls.
Kate was originally going to coach our U/17s, this is now going to be headed by Katie Mazer, one of our USA players and co-coached by Mark Southwell. Kristie McLean has also indicated a desire to assist with coaching and may too take a role growing our U/17s, thanks Kristie for this and all the work you are doing for the club behind the scenes.
The new role taken by Kate is "Junior Skills Coach" for the girls teams. She will look to assist coaches of each of the teams with developing the skills of selected individuals and do group work as needed. This allows Kate to attend when work permits and add value to those groups most in need. Kate sees that she will be playing with many of these girls when she returns to our side in 2008 or 2009.
Kate will also play an important role of ambassador between our clubs, helping the Wilderness players join us in using the kitchen and bar facilities and feeling welcome to join our social functions.
Thanks Kate for agreeing to take on this role and good luck with making the Aussie team and at Wilderness.
Regards
Charles Manning
Chairman

Good news and bad news

The good news is we are about to kick off the season and have our league and men's reserves teams sorted. We have U/11s and plenty of U/13s, the 15s girls and 17s boys and girls look good too. The sad news is we do not have a women's reserves this year due to pregnancies, players travelling and key 17s not continuing after finishing juniors. We also do not have a B grade men's because of an apparent lack of personnel and no one stepping up to organise it. Of big concern too is the fact that we do not have an U/15 boys team.
Sue Hogan is about to kick off the Warrior Kitchen, with kids/family meals at 6pm on Thurs starting 10 May.

Former Warrior is WomensLax.com's player of the week

Bridget Looney, who played for the Warriors in the STX Women's League last season, has this week been named WomensLax.com's Player of the Week for her four-goal match-winning performance against Notre Dame on the 18th of March. Well done Bridget!!

USA Invades Warrior Land!!

The Woodville Lacrosse Club will welcome three women's and two men's players from the USA to play in our league teams this season. Coming into our women's team are Katie Mazer from the University of Pennsylvania, Erin O'Boyle from Johns Hopkins University, and Shawn Darrell from Longwood University in Virginia.
Our men's team will welcome the inclusion of Brian Calabrese and Kyle Rotelli, both from the University of Delaware. We look forward to the arrival of our new players, who will be helping out with coaching this season as well.

Women's League Coach Welcomed

Woodville is pleased to announce the appointment of our new womens league coach Cathy Conaghty (previously Flett). A multiple rep at Australian and State level and recent Australian U/19 Team Coach, Cathy will bring much to our club.
She is already looking to develop our great junior talent and build on the strength in our unit by recruiting 3-4 top players from within Australia and bring in 2 USA players. She will most likely suit up to play in our Reserves, so with this injection of talent in both teams our womens program looks very exciting. Welcome Cathy!
Also on the women's program Peter Witcomb and Jason Vorrasi have been appointed as co-coaches of the Womens Reserves; they will be assisted by managers Steve Hodder and Barney Dinnison. So with the announcements of Mark Southwell and Kate Threadgold into the under 17s, Susan Barnes and Neil Parker into the under 15s and Tara Parker and Hannah Dinnison into the under 13s the women's program should get an early kickstart.

5 February 2007

Congratulations to our Australian Representatives

Congratulations to Stefan Guerin and Peter Witcomb on being selected for the Australian Under 21 Men's team for the Asia Pacific tournament in New Zealand in April. Congratulations also to Anthony Feleppa who has been selected in the Senior Men's Australian Indoor Lacrosse team, who are competing in the World Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in May.

3 February 2007

Mark Cappelluti named as Men's Reserves Coach for 2007

Season 2007 will see an influx of junior talent into our senior ranks including Jesse Whinnen, Shane Abbott, Dom Bailo and the two Toms - Dwyer and Philp added with the existing young talent of Brendan James, Ben Underwood and Dylan Welford and the return of David Pascoe means we have a great pool to develop. We should also start to see appearances from our U/17s like Adam Young and Josh Harvey too.
With an aging league squad the Warriors needed a coach who would build these players into league regulars within 18 months, this is why the club has turned to Mark Cappelluti to take the reins. It was a big decision for Mark, as he and Ally have a young family and work demands too, but given the success Mark achieved with taking a womens reserves to the flag a couple of years back and his focus and commitment to discipline and systems he is the right choice. We will need commitment and support from players to his approach and some good mature heads in the team to assist with developing these guys. Thanks Mark for taking on such and important role for the club. We will need a team manager, scorers and other helpers to let Mark focus on his role as coach, so please put your hand up if you would like to help out.
