The Woodville Lacrosse Club are celebrating a remarkable undefeated season after a 14-8 victory over arch nemesis Glenelg under lights at the Port Adelaide Hockey Club grounds on Saturday 25 August. |
|
As well as having a successful season in the men's league, the Warriors have four junior teams competing in the finals this season. Unfortunately for the Under 13 boys and girls, both teams were knocked out by North Adelaide in their respective semi finals. The Under 17 girls were defeated by Brighton but after finishing second in the minor round are still in contention and play in the preliminary final this coming weekend. The Under 15 girls team won their major semi final with a one-goal nailbiter over Burnside and go straight through to the Grand Final at the North Adelaide Lacrosse Club grounds on 8 September.
Brian Calabrese, Warriors premiership player and Tom Hanks lookalike, leaves Adelaide on Wednesday to return to the USA. We hope that you will always have fond memories of our club and cherish the success of being part of a premiership team. Thanks to the Guerin family for hosting Brian. Have a safe journey home Brian!
The Woodville Lacrosse Club defeated arch-rivals Glenelg 12-11 in overtime in a thrilling second semi final match at St Marys on Saturday. Down 5-8 at three quarter time, the Warriors pegged back the deficit to take the game into overtime. The Seahawks never gave up but the Warriors withstood the pressure to take the game by the narrowest of margins. Woodville now face the winner of this weekend's preliminary final match between Glenelg and Brighton. The Grand Final will be held at the Port Adelaide Hockey Club grounds, at the corner of Hart Street and Swan Terrace, Ethelton on Saturday 25 August, starting at 6pm.
Last week saw the finals matches played for the Warriors by Erin O'Boyle, Katie Mazer and Kyle Rotelli. We thank Erin, Katie and Kyle for your time and efforts at the club - as players, as coaches and as clubmates. We hope that you enjoyed your stay with us and hope that you never forget your time here. Many thanks also to the Dinnison and Matheson families and to Peter and Courtney for hosting our Americans.

The Quiz Night on Saturday 28 July also served as the Club's farewell to American recruit Shawn Darrell, who flew back home on Sunday morning. As well as being a great asset to the team and socially around the club she did great work with coaching the Under 11 girls, assisting with the Under 13s and running clinics at Seaton Park Primary. Will be missed by host families the Mannings, and Cathy Brooks & her daughters the Parker girls. Thank you Shawn! |

Thank you to all that bid for the two PCs. They have been sold for $300 and $280, with all proceeds going to the club. Thank you again to our anonymous donor.
Luke "Ozzy" Oswald played his 100th State League game in Saturday's hard-fought win against Burnside. Incidentally the website editor, the Oz lit up the game with a string of improbable intercepts that helped the Warriors break Burnside's shackles and score the last seven goals of the game for a 12-7 victory. Well done Oz, you legend.
Approximately 70 past players along with our sponsors and life members braved the weather to see our League men's team down Burnside 12-7, giving their expert opinions along the way whilst enjoying some nibbles and drinks. Those who could stay and others who came for the evening enjoyed a Gourmet BBQ dinner in the clubrooms (to everyone's relief that it was indoors) chatting over old times, photos, and downing a few more ales.
One of the memorable moments of the evening was a past player from the Port Adelaide days Lyne Skinner (aged approx 87) gave a speech and offered some words of wisdom.
Comment from past player:
"Congratulations and thanks by the way for Saturday night - it was great to see all the oldies, most of whom don't seem to look any different to how I remember them!"
Thanks must go to the organising committee in Sue Hogan, Jo Dinnison, Ignazio Marchesan, Cliff Savage, Kelvin Gaskin and Geoff Forrest in what was seen as a fantastic event that should be held every year.

The boys, some parents and some under 11s took the hike from Waterfall Gully to the summit and back. Picnic lunches and water in the backpacks and the boys headed off, just under a 3 hour turn around after lunch at the summit. A great team building and exercise session - thanks to all involved!! |

Last week the girls played in a gale force storm, winter at its fullest in Adelaide. 90 km/h winds! But now head into the mid season break and have a chance to travel and have some well earned adventures. The guys won their game Saturday in a tough encounter with Burnside and then have their break too, Kyle and Brian have some plans for trips too, so all should have some fun.
Sadly for Kyle he flies home two days before our big championship game in August. He will miss out on the chance to play for a championship medal. He might have to do some negotiating with his Delaware coaches???
All the players are involved with coaching juniors and are making a great contribution to our future. Shawn organised a lacrosse clinic at a local primary school "Seaton Park" that all the US players helped in at different times too. The crew have been a big hit at the club this year and have fitted in nicely.
Hope they all had a great 4th of July and that it starts to get a bit warmer than in Adelaide soon.

Club chairman Charles Manning took our 5 Americans with Kristy & Stef to the Adelaide Crows game against Geelong at AAMI Stadium on Sunday 10 June. |
Back row: Kyle Rotelli, Brian Calabrese, Kristy McLean & Erin O'Boyle. |
The two other US girls, Katie Mazer and Erin O'Boyle, arrived last Sunday and made a big impact in their first game on Wednesday. They helped the girls jump Glenelg and be leading at the first and second break, being up by 5 goals at one point before being over-run in the second half. The game was marred by a shocking injury to one of our best young talents, Danni Hunter. She was hit in the face by a Glenelg shot and was taken to hospital. All our thoughts are with Danni and we ask people to support her right now. Danni we are thinking about you, please make a speedy recovery. The club will be writing to the association about the need for considering making face protection compulsory for the League teams and to make our feelings known about the aggressive nature of the incident. This sort of play cannot be condoned.
Brian Calabrese and Kyle Rotelli arrive this morning, Friday 8 June. They will both debut for the league in tomorrow's match against Sturt up at St Mary's and continue Woodville's strong tradition of fielding players with Italian surnames.
The Woodville Lacrosse Club will be holding its Gala Day this Saturday, 2 June. All teams, junior and senior, men and women, will be playing at home on Saturday. Parents, friends, past players and all supporters are encouraged to come and support your club on this big day.
The University of Delaware's dream run into the NCAA Final Four ended with an 8-3 defeat to Johns Hopkins University on Saturday. Bad luck Brian and Kyle, but congratulations for being part of the most successful team in your school's history. We can't wait to meet you both on your arrival!
The University of Pennsylvania were also knocked out in the semi finals by Northwestern University, 2-12 on Saturday. We look forward to welcoming Penn's Katie Mazer as well as Erin O'Boyle from Hopkins to join our other US recruit Shawn Darrell to the Warriors' women's league team.

Australia have finished 6th at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Anthony contributed an assist in the 11-15 loss to England for a spot in the semi finals, followed by a goal and an assist in the 8-14 loss to Scotland for the 5th place final. We hope you had an amazing time in Canada and wish you a safe journey on your holidays and look forward to seeing you and Tracey on your return! |

Brian Calabrese and Kyle Rotelli's University of Delaware team continue their remarkable run in the NCAA Division I Lacrosse season with a 10-6 victory over UMBC yesterday. Delaware will participate in their first ever Final Four weekend, and face perennial powerhouse Johns Hopkins University in the semi final. Best of luck boys!!
Meanwhile, Katie Mazer of the University of Pennsylvania will also be heading to the Final Four after they defeated Maryland 9-7 on the weekend. Penn now take on top-ranked Northwestern University, for whom Brighton Lacrosse Club's Hannah Nielsen plays, in the semi final. Unfortunately Erin O'Boyle's Johns Hopkins lost to Duke University 7-12, which has ended their season.
Anthony Feleppa is representing Australia who are currently participating in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Australia went down in the first two games 9-19 to the USA and 4-24 to Canada, but bounced back yesterday to defeat Ireland 14-8, with Anthony contributing four valuable assists.
Jarrad "Iron Rod" Pangrazio will celebrate his 100th State League appearance in this weekend's game at Burnside. Well done Jarrad!
Woodville's recruits from the USA are having successful postseasons with their college teams. The two men's recruits, Brian Calabrese and Kyle Rotelli, were in the University of Delaware team who scored a major upset over the defending champions the University of Virginia 14-8 over the weekend, with Brian contributing a goal (and he's a defenceman!). They face UMBC in next weekend's quarter-final.
Woodville women's recruit's, Erin O'Boyle and Katie Mazer are also heading to the NCAA quarter-finals. Erin will be playing with Johns Hopkins University matching up against Duke and Katie Mazer will be with the University of Pennsylvania against Maryland. We wish them all luck.
This is all exciting news to go with the arrival of our first US player, Shawn Darrell. Shawn landed in Adelaide on Saturday morning, 12 May. Welcome Shawn!!
Charles Manning, veteran league player and Club Chairman, will tomorrow celebrate his 200th State League game for Woodville. A great milestone to reach after initially retiring from league almost 10 years ago. Congratulations Charles and we hope to celebrate the achievement with a big win!
I am pleased to announce that after finalising Kate's release to Wilderness for 1-2 seasons that Kate has agreed to take on a new role with our junior girls.
Kate was originally going to coach our U/17s, this is now going to be headed by Katie Mazer, one of our USA players and co-coached by Mark Southwell. Kristie McLean has also indicated a desire to assist with coaching and may too take a role growing our U/17s, thanks Kristie for this and all the work you are doing for the club behind the scenes.
The new role taken by Kate is "Junior Skills Coach" for the girls teams. She will look to assist coaches of each of the teams with developing the skills of selected individuals and do group work as needed. This allows Kate to attend when work permits and add value to those groups most in need. Kate sees that she will be playing with many of these girls when she returns to our side in 2008 or 2009.
Kate will also play an important role of ambassador between our clubs, helping the Wilderness players join us in using the kitchen and bar facilities and feeling welcome to join our social functions.
Thanks Kate for agreeing to take on this role and good luck with making the Aussie team and at Wilderness.
Regards
Charles Manning
Chairman
The good news is we are about to kick off the season and have our league and men's reserves teams sorted. We have U/11s and plenty of U/13s, the 15s girls and 17s boys and girls look good too. The sad news is we do not have a women's reserves this year due to pregnancies, players travelling and key 17s not continuing after finishing juniors. We also do not have a B grade men's because of an apparent lack of personnel and no one stepping up to organise it. Of big concern too is the fact that we do not have an U/15 boys team.
Sue Hogan is about to kick off the Warrior Kitchen, with kids/family meals at 6pm on Thurs starting 10 May.
Charles Manning
Chairman
Bridget Looney, who played for the Warriors in the STX Women's League last season, has this week been named WomensLax.com's Player of the Week for her four-goal match-winning performance against Notre Dame on the 18th of March. Well done Bridget!!
The Woodville Lacrosse Club will welcome three women's and two men's players from the USA to play in our league teams this season. Coming into our women's team are Katie Mazer from the University of Pennsylvania, Erin O'Boyle from Johns Hopkins University, and Shawn Darrell from Longwood University in Virginia.
Our men's team will welcome the inclusion of Brian Calabrese and Kyle Rotelli, both from the University of Delaware. We look forward to the arrival of our new players, who will be helping out with coaching this season as well.
Woodville is pleased to announce the appointment of our new womens league coach Cathy Conaghty (previously Flett). A multiple rep at Australian and State level and recent Australian U/19 Team Coach, Cathy will bring much to our club.
She is already looking to develop our great junior talent and build on the strength in our unit by recruiting 3-4 top players from within Australia and bring in 2 USA players. She will most likely suit up to play in our Reserves, so with this injection of talent in both teams our womens program looks very exciting. Welcome Cathy!
Also on the women's program Peter Witcomb and Jason Vorrasi have been appointed as co-coaches of the Womens Reserves; they will be assisted by managers Steve Hodder and Barney Dinnison. So with the announcements of Mark Southwell and Kate Threadgold into the under 17s, Susan Barnes and Neil Parker into the under 15s and Tara Parker and Hannah Dinnison into the under 13s the women's program should get an early kickstart.
Congratulations to Stefan Guerin and Peter Witcomb on being selected for the Australian Under 21 Men's team for the Asia Pacific tournament in New Zealand in April. Congratulations also to Anthony Feleppa who has been selected in the Senior Men's Australian Indoor Lacrosse team, who are competing in the World Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in May.
Season 2007 will see an influx of junior talent into our senior ranks including Jesse Whinnen, Shane Abbott, Dom Bailo and the two Toms - Dwyer and Philp added with the existing young talent of Brendan James, Ben Underwood and Dylan Welford and the return of David Pascoe means we have a great pool to develop. We should also start to see appearances from our U/17s like Adam Young and Josh Harvey too.
With an aging league squad the Warriors needed a coach who would build these players into league regulars within 18 months, this is why the club has turned to Mark Cappelluti to take the reins. It was a big decision for Mark, as he and Ally have a young family and work demands too, but given the success Mark achieved with taking a womens reserves to the flag a couple of years back and his focus and commitment to discipline and systems he is the right choice. We will need commitment and support from players to his approach and some good mature heads in the team to assist with developing these guys. Thanks Mark for taking on such and important role for the club. We will need a team manager, scorers and other helpers to let Mark focus on his role as coach, so please put your hand up if you would like to help out.
A great interview with Peter Inge on his retirement can be read at on the San Francisco Dragons website.
The Woodville Lacrosse Club's leadership team has begun work on the 2007 season. The new management committee to lead us into season 2007 has had its first meeting and is head down working on the behind scenes items to set us up for next season.
Led by new Chair, Charles Manning and President, Mark Southwell, they will build on the solid foundations established by the recent teams lead by Sue Hogan. Please see the link below for full details of our new management/leadership team.
