Warriors Game Report - 26 June 1999

Warriors out of Finals Race

Woodville 9, Burnside 10

Saturday, 26 June loomed as the date for the Woodville Warriors last bid for a finals berth. We had to beat Burnside to have any hope of reaching the top four, and with a four week break ahead of us and then the last two games against Brighton and Glenelg, it was important to win convincingly.

The Warriors started well, scoring the first two goals. Our defence looked strong, and our attack was cutting and passing well, despite Co-Captain Nicky Mordowicz still sidelined with a knee injury.

The game was hard fought with strong defence on both sides. Neither team could get a clear lead, but the Warriors managed to keep their noses in front.

The third quarter brought a turnaround with Burnside scoring easily and the lead see-sawed. Keli Wilson left the field with an injured ankle, leaving us with nine players after Natalie Brook was red carded earlier.

Going into the final quarter, the score was 7-7, where Australian and South Australian Co-Captain, Kylie Taylor, kept us in the game. She scored two excellent goals nearing the end of the game but she had very little help from her teammates. We appeared to have run out of steam and Burnside made the 1999 finals series by beating us by one goal.
