Warriors Game Report - 19 June 1999

Warriors still a chance for finals berth

Woodville 10, Uni Eagles 8

Saturday, 19 June was the date of the Woodville Warriors' second win of the 1999 season. We came up against our old nemesis, West Torrens (now Uni Eagles) and showed them we were still a force to be reckoned with.

For the first time in weeks, the Warriors went into the game with their full A Grade contingent, except for Co-Captain Nicky Mordowicz sidelined with a knee strain.

Linda Russo's goal in the opening minutes had the Warriors pumped and we had three goals on the board before the Eagles answered. We went into the first break 3 goals to 1 up.

The second quarter was just as good with a 6 to 3 result at half time. The Warriors played a good team game, plenty of talking in defence, although our catching and ground ball skills still need work. Natalie Brook and Krissy Wilson were excellent in centre and it certainly made a difference to get the ball from the centre draw.

The "Premiership Quarter" nearly resulted in our downfall. We let the Eagles get back into the game and instead of burying them, confusion in defence resulted in one of their players getting free on two occasions and scoring. Coach Rob Potter used a time out to good effect (our ears are still ringing from the volume!) and we scored quickly to go into the final term at 7 goals all.

The Warriors regrouped and showed that we could finally play four quarters of lacrosse (OK, three and a half!). With only a minute to go, Krissy Wilson received a penalty and shot the most perfect goal to seal our victory.

The final score of 10 goals to 8 ensured that we still have a chance to make the finals and the Warriors must win next week against Burnside to play in September.
