Warriors Game Report - 23 May 1999

Warriors Go Down in a Close One

Woodville 5, Burnside 6

The second game of the weekend double header was against Burnside, the only team in the competition we had beaten. Confidence was not overly high due to the loss against Uni Eagles the day before, but Burnside had also had a significant loss against Glenelg, so we were in with a chance.

The warm up prior to the match was good, and despite the rain and arctic wind, the team was eager to perform well in front of a pretty good crowd.

The first half of the game was a shambles. The Warriors looked no better than a B Grade team, with appalling catching, passing and ground balls skills. We were very lucky to be only 4 goals to nil down at half time, but our goalie, Emma Hart kept us in the game, along with some strong work by the defence. However, we were having a lot of difficulty in attack and seemed more content to pass the ball straight to the goalie’s stick than pass the ball around and cut.

After a blasting at the half time break by both Coach Rob Potter and Co-Captain Lyndall Holmes, the Warriors came out firing. Krissy Wilson lifted the team with the first goal and the girls continued to attack, winning the third term 4 goals to 1.

The final quarter was hard fought and the Warriors’ defence was tight. We started to win the ball out of centre, but we were still unable to find the back of the net. Burnside’s playmakers were held well by the defence and with 15 seconds left, and in our forward line, our coach called a time out to warn us that we were 6 goals to 5 down. Nicky Mordowicz passed beautifully to Kate Threadgold who unfortunately failed to score and as the whistle blew, Burnside won their first game of the season.

I can understand Rob Potter being furious with us after the game. To be 4 goals down at half time against a team like Burnside (and in fact not even scoring ourselves) the Warriors did not even look like A Graders, let alone, finals contenders. We have been given Tuesday off to go for a run, work on our stick skills and think about the game. However, several girls are committed enough and have asked to come out and work with the A Reserves men. Those who don’t come out will hopefully take the time to think about their own performance and how much improvement is needed.
