| Warriors Game Report - 22 May 1999 |
It could have been the loss of Tash Vorrasi and Kylie Taylor before the game, or perhaps the appalling weather conditions, but we were very unsettled from the start. Apart from atrocious stick and ground ball skills, we rarely won centres and Uni Eagles used this to their advantage. There are a few players in the team who certainly need to practise their ground balls, because if I see one more ground ball flicked into the air and an opposition player plucks it away, I will scream!
Krissy Wilson and Natalie Brook were the few shining lights in attack with their strong shooting, and Emma Hart played another outstanding game in goals. I thought the defence was reasonably tight, but the final score of 20 to 7 did not tell the same story.
I do not like to comment about umpiring, as I know they are doing their best and giving up their spare time for an amateur sport. However, if a player deliberately hits another player in the face and does not receive a yellow card despite saying to the injured player that ‘she was getting her back for an earlier incident’, the umpires need to start standing up to players, no matter what team they play for. This particular incident was disgusting and resulted in Krissy Wilson receiving a black eye, and two other teammates receiving cards for dissent when they questioned the umpire’s decision.
Unfortunately, this game disintegrated into the old Woodville versus West Torrens A Reserve mentality from years gone by, and I thought we were better than that.
