Warriors Game Report - 1 May 1999

Woodville rallies to upend Burnside

Woodville 10, Burnside 6

Saturday, 1st of May saw the Woodville Warrior women win their first A Grade game since re-joining the League competition in 1998. Our hapless opponents were Burnside, a team we expected to beat, but still considered dangerous.

Our game plan was to run and gun, so when they scored the first two goals early in the game, we had to revise and play more defensively. We went into the second quarter 3 goals to 1 down.

After some sensational saves by goalie Emma Hart, and strong defence, the Warriors were able to play our style of game and Nicky Mordowicz led the charge with three goals in the second quarter to be drawn 4 all at half time.

Kate Threadgold played a strong game on Burnside playmaker Sharni Wilson-Smith, who the Warriors knew could win the game off her own stick. Kate was ably helped by Kylie Taylor and Lyndall Holmes who doubled with her in front of goal.

Krissy Wilson deserved her Best on Ground award, winning several centres against Sharni and generally being everywhere when needed.

The fourth quarter was the Warrior's best, shooting 4 goals to nil and running out winners 10 goals to 6. It was a hard fought game and we were unsure of who had even won until we saw the broad smile of the face of coach, Rob Potter.
