Warriors Game Report - 21 August 1999

Warriors down West Torrens to advance straight to the Grand Final

Woodville 13, West Torrens 6

The Warriors preparation for this match up with West Torrens was very good as Coach Brown had certainly done his homework on the opposition. Training sessions revolved a great deal around the solid defensive unit, concentrating on the West Torrens plays and slide patterns. The attack was very sharp and all players were definitely well prepared for the finals campaign. The Warriors are definitely on a mission to win back-to-back Premierships!!!

The Warriors were fired up and jumped out of the blocks early to take charge of the game. Woodville's attack unit created great scoring opportunities and controlled the ball for most of the opening quarter. The Warriors skipped out to and early 4-0 lead until West Torrens managed to score two goals late in the quarter with Woodville's defence holding strong as usual. The Warriors managed to slot a further two goals for the quarter and with six different goal scorers lead at the first break 6-2.

A combination of West Torrens controlling the ball for longer periods and some unforced stick errors from the Warriors evened up the second quarter. Once again the defence led by Richard Feleppa and Craig Schicker held the West Torrens offence to only two goals for the period. On the attacking end, Woodville struggled a little and could only manage a goal each from Anthony Feleppa and James Inge to maintain the four goal lead as the score was 8-4 at the long break.

The third quarter saw a battle of the defence units as both teams struggled to post a score. Once again Woodville's defence maintained its supremacy holding West Torrens to a single goal for the quarter and West Torren's attackman Tony Sellan leaving the game with a torn hamstring muscle. The Warriors needed a spark and it was provided by Iggy Marchesan as he won a very tough ground ball to regain possession for Woodville and went on to slot the ball into the back of the net. A further goal by James Inge extended the lead as the third quarter ended with Woodville ahead 10-5.

Coach Brown began the final quarter with a few position changes. The Warriors again responded well and adapted quickly to control the ball as Peter Inge and Jason Vorrasi dominated in face-off allowing Woodville first use of the ball time and time again. This enabled the Warriors to create many scoring chances and with two goals from James Inge and one from Michael Santi went further ahead. Woodville's reliable defence held strong, led from the last line in goalie Aaron Sargent, who is in top form in recent weeks, and only let West Torrens score one more goal for the game as the Warriors ran out 13-6 winners and advance straight to the Grand Final.

Woodville advances to its third Grand Final appearance in third years with an opportunity to win its second Premiership in a row. They will face the winner of this Saturday's (28 August) Preliminary Final between Brighton and West Torrens. The Warriors will be in action again on the 4th September 2:45pm in the Grand Final at Findon Oval, Drummond Avenue Findon. Let's go Warriors, Back-to-Back ’98 and ’99.
