Warriors Game Report - 5 July 1999

Warriors crush Glenelg's Finals hopes

Woodville 16, Glenelg 9

The rescheduled matched from 19 June, saw Woodville take on the Seahawks from Glenelg at the Port Adelaide Hockey Club under lights on the turf field. Woodville's preparation for this game was very limited due to the state team's preparations for the Nationals beginning July 11. The Warriors had a very casual training session on the Saturday Morning as 9 out of the 15 team members have been training with the senior SA State Team. The Warriors were also still without the services of starting defenders Richard Feleppa and Simon Darling, who was ruled out through injury.

The Warriors got off to a sluggish start but created some quality scoring opportunities in the opening quarter but managed to hit the pipe on 4 or 5 occasions and ended up with 2 goals on the board at the first break. On the defensive end Woodville were playing quality ball but a few smart picks by Glenelg saw them get free to finish the quarter with 4 goals.

The Warriors shooting was much better in the second quarter and instead of hitting the pipes the ball started to find the back of the net. With players stepping up a notch all over the field and some very crisp ball movement Woodville went on to score 6 goals for the quarter. Glenelg could only manage to post a score twice as the Warrior defence asserted its authority with good talk and great team defence. The quarter ended with Woodville taking an 8 - 6 lead.

Once again quality defence was the key in the third quarter keeping Glenelg goalless for the entire period. On the attack end Woodville settled the ball well, took some time off the clock and created very high percentage scoring opportunities and posted 3 goals moving ahead 11 - 6 at the final break.

The Warriors' momentum carried over into the last quarter as all players lifted the intensity to defeat Glenelg and see their chances of a finals birth quashed completely for the year. Again the ball movement in attack was very crisp and as a result the Warriors found the back of the net 5 more times for the game and some great team defence saw Glenelg only manage a further three goals. Woodville ran out 16 - 9 winners. It was a great overall team game that saw everyone rise to the next level to beat Glenelg who were strengthened by the return of Australian defender Robert Lawson and University of Maryland's Brian Zeller. I believe there was also another player from Western Australia who also played for Glenelg in attack.
