Warriors Game Report - 26 June 1999

Warriors remain undefeated downing West Torrens yet again

Woodville 15, West Torrens 11

The Warriors went into this game a little underdone, as the previous week's game against Glenelg was postponed, and many players are involved with the senior State Team, leaving little time for the team to practise together prior to this encounter. The Warriors were without the services of midfielder Michael Santi (in Melbourne with the Australian U/19 Team), starting defenceman Richard Feleppa still on suspension and starting attackman Anthony Feleppa due to a Uni exam on the Saturday afternoon. Coach Brown suited up for this game due to the lack of available players and the Warriors knew that against second place West Torrens this was not going to be an easy game.

However the Warriors were pumped for this game and rose to the challenge starting off the first quarter with a barrage of shots on the West Torrens goalie. The attack looked very focussed on the game and with quick, crisp ball movement created a high number of quality shots resulting in a 7 goal quarter. While on the defensive end the talk seems to have improved remarkably in recent weeks. Strong tough defence kept West Torrens to only 4 goals for the quarter and often turned good defence into quality attacking chances. The Warrors skipped out to an early 7 - 4 lead.

In the second quarter the Eagles came back at the Warriors as expected and both teams' defence proved strong stopping repeated efforts on the cage. The Warriors created countless scoring opportunities but missed the goal by inches or hit the pipes scoring only 2 goals to complete a frustrating quarter. Once again the strong Warriors defence did its job holding the West Torrens attack to only 2 goals. The Warriors leading 9 - 6 at the halftime break.

Again in the third quarter the teams were very even in a high standard game with Woodville missing countless scoring chances by a whisker. Woodville's defence proved to be the key once again stopping West Torrens time after time and turning the ball back to attack ending a 2 - 1 3rd quarter in favour of West Torrens taking the score to 10 - 8 in a very close exciting game.

This set the stage for a great final quarter and the Warriors rose to the occasion lifting the intensity all over the ground. The attack was very focussed and patient in attack taking the high percentage options on the cage and managed to slot 5 goals past the West Torrens goalkeeper. Good talk in defence between the long sticks and the shorties was the key to holding the Eagles to only 3 goals for the quarter as Woodville ran out 15 - 11 winners. A great 'A' Grade come back for Coach Brown with his field time limited but still resulting in 2 goals.
