Warriors overcome second half hurdle to defeat Burnside

The Warriors travelled to Burnside to face the Bears on their home ground in round 9 of the Lacrosse SA Men's 'A' Grade competition. Tuesday night's training was a team dinner at Fasta Pasta for some team bonding and a rest for the team's State reps who have been training very hard for the past three weeks.

Once again the Warriors played some quality lacrosse and created excellent scoring opportunities as they got off to a flying start with Brett Howe scoring 3 goals and 2 assists in the first quarter. On the defensive end of the field Woodville stopped Burnside's limited scoring opportunites and turned the ball back to attack time and time again taking a first quarter lead of 6 - 3.

The second quarter saw a very similar game as the first, with James Inge steadying the ship for the Warriors in attack scoring from quality shots on goal. The defence remained solid in the second period led by Craig Schicker's (shoulder of death) hit on Scott Brooks of Burnside, knocking the wind out of his sails. Woodville continued their form to lead the game 12 - 6 at the half.

The third quarter was marred by an incident very early in the quarter...Burnside's Scott Brooks's cowardly act of cross checking Warrior defender Richard Feleppa in the throat sparking off a fight that saw five expulsions for the game and Richard Feleppa being reported for striking but mysteriously no mention of the initial cross check to the throat. Unfortunately for Woodville their three players to be expelled were the goalie Aaron Sargent, starting defender Simon Darling and Richard Feleppa, also a starting defender. This left Woodville with 12 active players to run out the rest of the game and meant a short stick (Dave Rowley) was to play a half in strict defence. However the Warriors regrouped from this event and outscored Burnside 4 - 0 to lead the game 16 - 6 at the final break.

A combination of the expelled key players, including two starting defenders and the Warriors goalie, and running the secnd half with only 12 active players took its toll in the last quarter as Woodville could only manage to score 2 goals and the massively depleted Warriors defence could only hold off the Burnside attack for so long allowing 5 goals to end the game with an 18 - 11 win over Burnside.
