Warriors Game Report - 5 June 1999

Warriors upend Brighton to move to a (8-0) record for the season

Woodville 15, Brighton 5

The Warriors were up against the Bombers from Brighton in Round 8 of the Lacrosse SA Men's 'A' Grade Competition. The week on the training track saw the Warriors work on some defensive strategies and refine a new Extra Man (EMO) play. This week also saw the return of goalie Aaron Sargent to the team to strengthen the Woodville defensive end.

For a change the Warriors got off to a good start due to a different pre-game warm up strategy. Woodville managed to maintain possession throughout most of the first quarter and create very high percentage scoring opportunities scoring 3 goals. On the defensive end the Warriors controlled the game when Brighton had their rare chance in attack holding Brighton goalless in the opening period. The Warriors led the game 3 - 0 at the first break.

Woodville continued to control the ball and create great scoring chances in the second quarter by once again maintaining possession in attack. As usual the defence stopped Brighton from scoring when they had their limited opportunities and only allowed 1 goal against them for the period. The Woodville attack went on a scoring rampage as they continually moved the ball and took quality shots on Glen Revell the Brighton goalie, passing him 7 times to take a 10 - 1 lead at half-time.

Just as everything was swinging the Warriors way Brighton lifted the pressure in their defensive end and the Warriors attack ran the ball instead of moving it crisply through the air as they had done in the first half. This led to unforced errors and turnovers let Brighton have more scoring opportunities than in the first half. This also meant Woodville's shot selection was not of the same quality, often taking poor shots and ending the third quarter with 4 goals and holding Brighton to only 2 goals. Woodville led 14 - 3 going into the last quarter.

The last quarter is one the Warriors would like to forget as Brighton outscored them 2 - 1 as frustration crept into the game with too much carry of the ball. Just as well Woodville's defence did their job keeping Brighton to only 2 goals ending the game with Woodville victorious 15 - 5.
