Warriors Game Report - 22 May 1999

Warriors scalp Eagles

Woodville 16, West Torrens 7

Round 6 saw the Warriors play West Torrens at Renown Park in cold and wet conditions. After having Sunday training off, Coach Brown decided to have an easy Tuesday training session at the North Adelaide Aquatic Centre for a swim and a spa which the players all appreciated. Thursday night however saw the Warriors back on the training track for an intense session. Once again this was not going to be and easy game and the players needed to be focused on the job at hand.

After a reasonably slow start to the first quarter, Woodville picked up the pace and got the ball moving. The attacking players had trouble making their moves in the muddy conditions but stormed home with 5 goals for the quarter. The Warriors defence line held strong as usual, keeping the Eagles attack scoreless to hold onto a 5 - 0 lead at the first break.

West Torrens re-grouped in the second quarter and capitalised on the Warriors' mistakes. Woodville's attack went a little individual in this period and as a result turned the ball over on a number of occasions. The Warriors still created plenty of opportunities in attack but sailed the ball wide of the goals time after time. However Woodville did not panic and kept attacking as they knew it was only a matter of time before the shots hit their mark. The Eagles scored 3 goals for the quarter while Woodville could only manage 1 taking the score to 6 - 3 in favour of the Warriors.

As predicted, the Warriors' shots found the target in the third quarter, as the Warriors' attack settled and created some great scoring opportunities. Woodville's defence did their job keeping West Torrens to only 2 goals in the third quarter while Woodville found the back of the net 6 times, stretching their lead to 12 - 5 at the final break.

The last quarter saw West Torrens' hopes of a comeback squashed as Paul Zammit scored two late goals. West Torrens could only manage to score 2 goals for the quarter as they struggled to find a consistent scoring avenue. The Warriors went on to score a further 2 goals to win the game 16 - 7. The win takes Woodville's overall 1999 record to (6-0), and (2-0) versus West Torrens which sees the Warriors 2 games (4 pts) clear of West Torrens at the top of the premiership table.
