Warriors Game Report - 15 May 1999

Warriors rally in second half to upend Glenelg

Woodville 21, Glenelg 9

The Warriors faced Glenelg at Barratt Reserve in Round 5 of the Lacrosse SA Men's league season. This game was always going to test the Warriors' depth with Ignazio Marchesan, Tim Jaeger and Craig Schicker sidelined with injuries. However Woodville was confident of a good performance.

The first quarter saw Glenelg adopt a style of game that was used by Woodville five years ago, this was to gain posession of the ball, play out very wide and maintain possession for long periods before attempting to go to the goal. This proved to be very boring but nevertheless effective in the first half. The quarter ended with the Warriors in front 5 - 3.

Once again in the second quarter Glenelg adopted the same tactics and took a lot of time off the clock by holding onto the ball. When the Warriors got their limited chances with the ball, some of the shot selections were questionable. However the Seahawks ended the second quarter scoring two goals and keeping the Warriors scoreless. The scoreline at the halfway mark was 5 - 5.

During the half-time break Coach Brown ordered the defence to push out very aggressively and take the ball away from Glenelg. This tactic proved very effective as the Warriors saw a great deal more of the ball in offence. Time and time again the defence took the ball away and ran it down creating good opportunities for the Warrior attack unit. The third quarter saw Woodville score 8 goals while Glenelg could only find the back of the net twice, taking the score to 13 - 7.

Unfortunately for Glenelg the last quarter was much of the same with the Warriors defence not allowing their attack to settle and taking the ball away. The Woodville attack also settled and created great high percentage shots and scored almost at will notching up another 8 goals and Glenelg could only manage a further 2 goals for the game. The Warriors ran out winners 21 - 9.
